The National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) is a statutory government organization under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Science and Technology. The Centre for HEalthy and Sustainable CitieS (CHESS) is a research centre under the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) that focuses on behavioural and community analytics & networks applied to health, risk and environment. With a seed funding of S$1.5M from Nanyang Techonological University (NTU), CHESS conducts research activities to develop healthy and sustainable cities using existing and emerging information and communication technologies. CHESS takes new research approaches by conducting cutting-edge social and computational research methods in order to solve complex problems faced by modern cities. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, CHESS will work with other NTU research entities and international partners to obtain research outcomes that have an impact to individuals, societies and cities. CHESS aims to nurture future researchers that will take on the challenges of developing healthy and sustainable cities.
Flinders University’s MDRI is a multi-disciplinary area of research strength within the University, covering areas such as; Assistive Technology & Rehabilitation Engineering; Biomechanics & Implants; Computational Biomechanics; Devices, Sensors & Signals; Health Informatics; Medical Image Analysis; and Medical Simulation. The Institute has the expertise and capabilities to deliver innovative solutions to the medical and allied health sectors, and with close connections to the clinical community, research projects are relevant and accessible.
OrbIT is a novel and accessible serious gaming system that was developed by researchers, designers and clinicians from Flinders University, the University of South Australia, and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, Australia. The system represents a complete ‘all-in-one’ serious gaming system that allows a person with limited hand control and/or coordination to independently play computer games, with a view to providing them with a novel form of therapy. It was co-designed in conjunction and consultation with end users and guided by the principles of Universal Design. OrbIT features an interactive tablet-style main menu, fifteen engaging custom-made 2- and 3-D games, and a novel two-handed ‘orb’ shaped controller (nicknamed ‘Orby’) that the player uses to control their game character. The system uses procedural generation to produce new game content and to randomise game events, meaning each time a game is played a new scenario is encountered. This improves game ‘replay-ability’, meaning the system is used more than if the games were static and unchanging. The software also tracks all game activity and records and posts high scores for all games and players. OrbIT also provides haptic vibration feedback to the player’s hands during game play, to augment the gaming experience. In summary, OrbIT has been designed as a socially inclusive, integrated, accessible, haptic, fun, challenging and engaging serious gaming system for people with a hand impairment. The primary focus of Biorobotics is to analyze biological systems from a “biomechatronic” point of view, trying to understand the scientific and engineering principles underlying their extraordinary performance.
